Every Album You Stream Is on Loan
Something worth thinking about in 2026: every album you “have” on a streaming service is on loan.
Licensing agreements lapse. Catalogs get pulled during contract disputes. Remasters quietly replace the versions you fell in love with, and the original becomes unavailable. The record you played at your wedding can just stop being there one Tuesday, and nobody sends a note.
The shelf doesn't do that
The CDs in your house are yours. Ripped once, properly, at full quality, they sit in your library permanently — and they'll play through the same system, at the same fidelity, in twenty years.
Streaming is a wonderful way to discover music. It's a poor way to keep it. Most serious listeners end up doing both: streaming to find things, owning the ones that matter.
Ripping without a computer
The usual objection is that ripping a large collection is tedious. It is, if you're doing it on a laptop with software that needs supervision.
