Every choice costs more than the obvious alternative
The linear power supply is built into the chassis rather than sitting outboard at the end of a DC cable. That's harder to engineer and harder to manufacture, and it removes a cable and a connection from the most sensitive part of the system.
The input is optical. The electrical path to the rest of your house is broken before the signal ever arrives, because light carries no ground noise.
The chassis is machined and heavy enough to sit dead still. Not for looks — though it does look the part — but because mechanical resonance is real and cheap to eliminate if you're willing to pay for metal.
Each of those decisions is defensible on its own terms. Together they cost considerably more than the alternatives, which is the honest reason this product is priced where it is.
It isn't for most systems
We'll say so plainly: if your front end isn't currently the limiting factor in your system, this is the wrong purchase. Money spent on speakers, room treatment, or amplification will do more.
But if you've built something where the source is now what's holding you back — where you've addressed the room, the speakers, and the electronics, and the remaining question is what's feeding the DAC — this is the end of that road.
